    Commuting, Traffic & Parking - (14) Comments

How long does it take you to get to work in the morning? Do you feel safe driving? What can we do to make things better and how much will it help?

    Alnoor's Position On This Issue

I'd love to say that we should all give up our cars and use transit, but that isn't going to happen. In the meantime, we can look at innovative new ideas to improve traffic flow. I've heard plenty of suggestions, from toll roads to renegotiating with the Tsuu T'ina. While I'm certainly open to looking at these things – we need to focus on reasonable terms that work for real people.

  • Keep Up With Traffic Problems

    Keep Up With Traffic Problems

We need more effort and focus on solving Calgary's traffic problems. Things seem to be getting worse, faster than we can find solutions.

  • Urban Sprawl And Traffic/Commuting

    Urban Sprawl And Traffic/Commuting

The urban sprawl in Calgary is terrible, everybody knows that. So what are we going to do about it? I'm not quite sure that there is a lot we can do about it. We've made desisions, and we've built our comunities so far into the suburbs that at this point you wouldn't be able to change that at all. Not that it's not impossible but I do think we need to focus on density. When we have people commuting 2 hours to get into the city core, that doesn't make any sense.

Do Something About Traffic & Urban Sprawl

I live in Ramsay so I don't have a commute so I can get into downtown in a couple different ways and for me that works. I couldn't imagine living in some of the communities in southern Calgary and northern Calgary. The commutes that some people do are ridiculous! They don't make any sense and any time I am forced to go on the road I get so frustrated and think to myself why do we do this way? Why have we designed our city this way? Is nobody thinking about these issues? Is nobody worried about urban sprawl?

  • LRT

    LRT

Many countries have construction crews working 24 hours a day in order to reach deadlines and avoid construction street closures. I am wondering why the City if Calgary does not explore this option. They could have crews work in shifts (thus no overtime) and this would cut the construction time for projects (such as the West LRT) in half and save us all money. If the city is installing a deadline for Encana – why not themselves?

I am concerned about some communities getting preferences for sound walls over others. Bowness, for example, could use one along Highway 1. The noise is terrible from the traffic; one can hear it all throughout the valley.

We should encourage carpooling by launching a carpooling programme. Other cities have such a programmes where one goes online and writes where s/he is going, what time and what date and they match him with a carpooler. Why is it that we don't have such a programme? why is it that we have not taken steps to keep one lane for carpooling only? Council needs to seriously address these issues and take steps to catch up with other cities who are doing much better in terms of infrastructure when it comes to car traffic.

This city, through the Calgary Parking Authority needs to take the lead at reducing Calgary Parking Rates and bring them in line with other major cities of similar size.

    Barlow Trail is a problem.

  • Downtown Parking Is Horrible

    Downtown Parking Is Horrible

Downtown parking is horrible. There is not enough, its expensive, its hard to find, even if you find it you can find where to pay for it. So it just becomes a huge mess. A downtown trip should be ten minutes and it ends up being an hour because of parking so that's an issue we need to work on.

I would like to know about your views on the SW portion of the ring road? Are you for/against taking out 20% of lakeview to built this road?

  • transit

    transit

Apparently Calgary is a world class city, however, our transit system is the worst of any city I have been to around the globe. For starters, It is INCREDIBLY expensive compared to other systems, and the prices seem to go up at every opportunity. I have absolutely no idea why I have to pay the same rate going one stop on the C-train as someone commuting all the way across the city. There should be a Zone system. There is also no reason why they do not run later on weekends (increase the fairs on late night weekend fairs for security -people will pay! -ie after midnight), or why there is not a reduced rate for non-peak hours. Social services like transit need to be regulated so they are effective for people... not only profitable for the business.

The 4 traffic lights on Crowchild Trail north of the river is a nightmare during rush hour and most of the day. If you are elected mayor, what are you going to do about those 4 traffic lights on Crowchild Trail north of the river? Will you do nothing or come up with plan to remove them??

  • Glenmore bottleneck

    Glenmore bottleneck

To get to south or south east people in the south west have one route: Glenmore trail. The problem(s): one accident and it's bumper to bumper, they are constantly paving or modifying or building along it which clogs up traffic! We NEED 2 more high volume routes to link the s.w. to the rest of Calgary along that corridor, one would just be a band-aid over a deep wound.
