Safety & Crime Prevention - (10) Comments
How do you feel about our cities crime? Do you feel safe in your communities? Can you confidently do what you like where you like, safely and securly without concern? Or in the event something bad did happen, do you believe you would get the help you need?
Alnoor's Position On This Issue
Keeping the streets safe should be the top priority of any municipality, and the budget that goes toward that goal should reflect that priority. Our problems have nothing to do with our excellent police chief and his hard working police force. For years, the police budget has been only one budget amongst many, and the real needs of the force have been submerged in bureaucratic politicking. For instance, did you know that The Calgary Police force are working with a computer system that hasn't been updated since the mid-80's? City Council needs to take control, and insist on giving the force the tools that it is already asking for -- even if that means making do with less elsewhere.

Crime Is Holding Back Calgary's Downtown
I believe one of the reasons our downtown core is so deserted at night is because we've allowed the criminals to take over. Other world cities have much more culture and entertainment in the core and large crowds make it hard for criminals and gang members to operate.

Calgary's Downtown Is Not What It Should Be
Even though Calgary isn't as vibrant as I'd like it to be, I think the city is getting a little better and every year I enjoy the city life in Calgary more and more. But one of the more dissapointing things is when I go downtown in the evnings, theres really only two months of the year where I feel like any body else lives here. In other cities, it's nice to go and be around people. Often when you go downtown in calgary there's no body there, it's a ghost town, the office buildings empty after 7 o'clock, and really the only people you see are police officers, homeless people, and that's about it.

We always talk about more policing for crime; but what about fixing the root of the problems instead of he symptoms? One example leisure centres with affordable activities geared toward the interests of the youth would perhaps keep more young people off the streets. We will always need policing but if we can possibly reduce crime by addressing the root (lack of places to hang out for youth), why not attempt it?

Ticket Quotas
The city police quota has to assure a certain amount of tickets each month. It seems like at the end of the month everyone around me is getting tickets. It may be the dumbest thing they've come up with but officers are giving out tickets at that time.
